"The doctrine of the divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity."
John Adams

"The United States is in no way founded on the Christian Religion."
George Washington

"There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites."
Thomas Jefferson

"Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one he must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear."
Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, August 10, 1787

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State."
Thomas Jefferson, letter to Danbury Baptist Association, CT., Jan. 1, 1802

"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."
Napoleon Bonaparte

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion."
Steven Weinberg

“We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.”
Jonathan Swift

“I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world.”
Richard Dawkins

“All religions are founded on the fear of the many and the cleverness of the few.”
Stendhal

“For seventeen hundred years the Christian sect has done nothing but harm”
Voltaire

“Religion is something left over from the infancy of our intelligence, it will fade away as we adopt reason and science as our guidelines.”
Bertrand Russell
